Washing Your Fruits and Veggies

Did you know that washing your fruits and veggies can often reduce or eliminate any minute levels of pesticide residues, if residues are present at all? It’s true. This information is from the Federal Food and Drug Administration which also states that washing is a healthy habit to follow before eating any fresh fruit or veggie.
But, what is the appropriate washing process for produce? Again, according to FDA:
- Wash produce with large amounts of cold or warm tap water, and scrub with a brush when appropriate; do not use soap or detergents.
- Throw away the outer leaves of leafy vegetables, such as lettuce and cabbage.
- Many pre-cut, bagged or packaged produce items are pre-washed and ready-to-eat. If so, it will be stated on the packaging and you can use the produce without further washing.
It’s that simple. No special produce washes or other steps are needed. These easy washing steps should be followed for both conventional and organically grown produce before eating, cutting or peeling to remove any residues, dirt or bacteria that may be present. The washing recommendations from FDA should be followed no matter where your produce comes from – a grocery store, farmers’ market or your own backyard.
But remember: Always clean hands, scrub brushes and colandars before using them to wash your fresh fruits and vegetables.
Read, learn, choose but eat more fruits and veggies every day for better health and a longer life.
