<section  class='av_textblock_section av-jteh0ugk-9e38f9a18500ff32319cac89d55035c2 '   itemscope="itemscope" itemtype="https://schema.org/BlogPosting" itemprop="blogPost" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop="text" ><p>Yet another peer-reviewed study shows the significant health benefits of eating fruits and veggies.  A team of researchers from Tufts University and Brigham and Women&#8217;s Hospital in Boston analyzed the effects of healthful food “prescriptions.” The study determined that “prescriptions” for healthy foods could save more than $100 billion in healthcare costs.  The healthy foods included fruits and veggies (of course!) plus seafood, whole grains and plant oils.</p>
<p><a href="https://now.tufts.edu/news-releases/prescribing-healthy-food-medicaremedicaid-cost-effective-could-improve-health-outcomes">The study</a>, published in the journal PLOS Medicine<em>,</em> followed adults between the ages of 35 and 80 who were enrolled in Medicare and/or Medicaid. It established two scenarios: One in which Medicare/Medicaid covered the cost of 30% of fruits and vegetables, the other covered fruits, vegetables, seafood, whole grains, plant oils, and other healthy foods.</p>
<p>The first scenario found that “prescriptions” for fruits and veggies would prevent 1.93 million cardiovascular events (such as heart attacks) and 350,000 deaths, as well as cut healthcare costs by $40 billion. The second scenario would prevent 3.28 million cardiovascular events, 620,000 deaths, and 120,000 cases of diabetes and save the U.S. healthcare system $100 billion.</p>
<p>“Both scenarios were cost-effective at five years and highly cost-effective at 10 and 20 years and over a lifetime,” according to the study.</p>
<p>This study complements decades of nutritional research that show the amazing benefits of eating more fruits and vegetables per day. Most of these studies were conducted using conventionally grown produce.</p>
<p>Read, learn, choose but eat more organic and conventional fruits and veggies for better health and a longer life.</p>

<section  class='av_textblock_section av-jteh0ugk-9e38f9a18500ff32319cac89d55035c2 '   itemscope="itemscope" itemtype="https://schema.org/BlogPosting" itemprop="blogPost" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop="text" ><p>There is so much good stuff to say about organic and conventional produce.  From studies which clearly show the safety of both to decades of research that illustrate the disease prevention aspects of these nutrient dense foods.  Plus farms and farming companies continue to develop innovative, convenient fruit and vegetable products which are helping to increase consumption.</p>
<p>But while we are making some headway, <a href="https://www.safefruitsandveggies.com/blog/new-cdc-report-produce-consumption-still-only-1-10-eat-enough">only one in 10 Americans eat enough produce</a> according to the Centers for Disease Control.  Why?  Because barriers to consumption still exist. One of those barriers is safety fears generated by certain groups who inaccurately disparage the more affordable and accessible forms of produce.</p>
<p>Among the longest and biggest offenders comes from an activist group that annually releases its so-called “dirty dozen” list.  Since 1995, this group’s fear-based ‘marketing against’ tactic disparaging the most popular produce items has been used in an attempt to promote purchasing of organic products.</p>
<p>Look, we completely understand advocating for your members when the information is credible and the science is strong.  The AFF advocates on behalf of organic and conventional farmers of fruits and vegetables and the safety of their products every day.  But when you raise unfounded fears based upon <a href="https://www.safefruitsandveggies.com/residue-research/journal-toxicology-research-article">unsupportable science</a> about the only food group health experts universally agree we should eat more of, it is time to revisit your approach.  Especially when <a href="https://www.safefruitsandveggies.com/residue-research/nutrition-today-low-income-shoppers-and-fruits-and-vegetables-what-do-they-think">peer-reviewed research</a> is showing this tactic may result in low-income consumers stating they are less likely to purchase <strong>any</strong> produce – organic or conventional &#8211; after learning about the “dirty dozen” list.</p>
<p>Put another way, according to these research findings, this activist group may actually be ‘marketing against’ their own constituents’ organic products by releasing this list.</p>
<p>To summarize, the “dirty dozen” list is scientifically unsupportable, it may negatively impact consumers’ purchasing decisions and it’s possibly even detrimental to the very products the list authors are trying to promote.   After almost 25 years, it is time to retire this tactic in favor of more creative “marketing for” strategies that encourage consumption and doesn’t scare consumers.</p>

<section  class='av_textblock_section av-jteh0ugk-9e38f9a18500ff32319cac89d55035c2 '   itemscope="itemscope" itemtype="https://schema.org/BlogPosting" itemprop="blogPost" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop="text" ><p>To everyone that has read about the “dirty dozen” list and is now confused and conflicted about buying the more affordable and accessible fruits and veggies, this blog is for you.  Keep in mind that the “dirty dozen” list is designed to make you worry and be fearful.  After all, fear is a very powerful motivator and the list authors attempt to increase safety fears to motivate and influence consumers’ produce buying decisions.</p>
<p>So here are some facts about the “dirty dozen” list that underscore you can consume either conventional or organic produce with confidence.  Both are safe and the right choice is to eat more every day.</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Arbitrary Methodology:</strong> According to Dr. Carl Winter, toxicologist, University of California, Davis.  “This year’s EWG list is produced using the same arbitrary methodology the EWG has used in the past.  Most importantly, the EWG focuses upon the presence (or absence) of pesticide residues in its methodology and public statements rather than on the actual amounts of pesticides detected, which are extremely low.  To accurately assess consumer risks from pesticides, one needs to consider three major factors – 1) the amount of residue on the foods, 2) the amount of food consumed, and 3) the toxicity of the pesticides.  The methodology used by EWG ignores all three.”</li>
<li><strong>Meet Organic Standard:</strong> Did you know that the vast majority of conventionally grown produce tested by United States Department of Agriculture could qualify to be labeled “organic,” specific to their residue levels? It’s true. The USDA allows organic produce to have residues that are “less than 5% of EPA tolerances” and the majority of residues found on conventionally grown produce are below this level.  This nicely illustrates how low residues are, if present at all.</li>
<li><strong>You Can Eat A Lot of Kale:</strong>  If you are concerned about residues on kale you would have to eat a lot more each day to see any health effects.  In fact, a man would have to eat 26,061 servings <em>in a day</em>, a woman 18,615 servings, a teenager 14,892 servings and a child 7,746 servings in a day and they still would not have any health effects from residues.  This is according to <a href="https://www.safefruitsandveggies.com/pesticide-residue-calculator/">an analysis</a> by toxicologists with the University of California’s Personal Chemical Exposure Program.</li>
</ul>
<p>And, some final advice for parents from Dr. Winter:  “Parents should continue to feed their children lots of fruits and vegetables regardless of whether they are produced organically or conventionally.  There is no legitimate evidence demonstrating that consuming conventional fruits and vegetables is of harm but plenty of evidence showing that reducing consumption of fruits and vegetables is harmful.  Parents should not feel guilty for feeding their children healthy conventional fruits and vegetables.”</p>
<p>Read, learn, choose but eat more organic and conventional fruits and veggies every day for better health and a longer life.</p>

<p>You’re trying to juggle work life, mom life and having a life but are feeling all out of balance. Your boss needed this yesterday, and your baby has been sick and you’re feeling under the weather yourself.</p>
<p>You run to the market to grab the ingredients to make homemade soup because surely that’ll be the ticket to getting you two to feel better in no time. But shoot! The market is out of the organic items you need and now you’re forced to buy conventional produce. You’ve been repeatedly told that organic is the safer, more nutritious option and now that you’re buying conventional instead of running to another store to purchase organic you are overcome with “mommy guilt.”</p>
<p>Does this sound familiar?</p>
<p>The onset of one stressful situation that then spirals into another stressful situation and viola, you’ve officially categorized yourself as the worst mom ever.</p>
<p>Friends, as a mother and registered dietitian nutritionist I want to tell you that thought couldn’t be further from the truth!</p>
<p>The thing is, we’re constantly bombarded with mixed messaging as to what is the best and right way to feed ourselves and our children. Rather than listening to health professionals, the media portrays the latest celebrity touting an organic celery juice and the trend of “dirty dozen” fear-mongering that leaves consumers like yourself questioning every single thing your gut (and science) tells you is correct.</p>
<p>Rest assured, we don’t want you to stress anymore. I’m here to help guide you with credible nutrition advice on how to manage that stress so you can be the healthiest for both you and your baby!</p>
<p>First things first, in order to be the healthiest for your family, you actually need to look at the entire spectrum of maternal health, which begins the moment you decide you want to conceive. Once you get pregnant, the rollercoaster of stress doesn’t end, it just becomes different. Thus, the phases of motherhood all build upon each other and learning how to manage your stress and form healthy habits allow you to create the nourishing environment you want for your baby, building their immunity, improving their health and fostering an intuitive relationship with all foods.</p>
<p>The American Heart Association (1) and the Center for Disease Control (2) recommend managing stress through finding support, moving more, laughing, getting enough sleep and nourishing your body with healthy foods — sounds doable (and fun) right?!</p>
<p>As much as moms (and moms in the making) want to conquer all of these things, time becomes an issue and then the above mixed messages begin to consume thoughts (as in said case of mom faced with ONLY conventional produce).</p>
<p>For instance, take the latest Nutrition Today study which found misleading messaging that labeled certain fruits and vegetables as having “higher” pesticide residues, leaving low income shoppers less likely to purchase any fruits or vegetables, regardless if grown organically or not (3).</p>
<p>Is that the message trained professionals like myself want consumers to be faced with?</p>
<p>Absolutely not!</p>
<p>You see, lists like the “Dirty Dozen” that are released every year contribute to the demonizing of fruits and vegetables grown conventionally and confusion amongst the public overall on what to eat.</p>
<p>If you’re actively concerned about finding out the pesticide residues actually found on your favorite fruits and vegetables, you can use the <a href="https://www.safefruitsandveggies.com/pesticide-residue-calculator/">Pesticide Residue Calculator</a> here. But, rest assured, the latest data from the United States Department of Ag’s Pesticide Data Program (PDP) report has shown that 99% of pesticide residues on foods tested are at levels below the tolerances established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and pose no safety concern (4).</p>
<p>To show you how a nutritionist (and mama!) incorporates a variety of foods into her diet, here are my top five foods (all considered members of the “Dirty Dozen” list) that I actively eat as well as recommend to my clients. And spoiler alert, I help educate my clients on choosing the organic or conventional variety that they feel more comfortable with, can afford but most importantly, will eat!</p>
<p>Five Nutrient Dense Foods To Fight Stress &amp; Improve Maternal Health</p>
<p>1.      Strawberries: Filled with vitamin C, this is a win-win for mom and baby! Try them in smoothies, popsicles or <a href="https://shawsimpleswaps.com/avocado-toast/">sliced over toast</a> with cottage cheese for a quick snack.</p>
<p>2.      Spinach: A plant based source of iron that easily pairs with a <a href="https://shawsimpleswaps.com/sesame-dressing/">citrus fruit like oranges</a> to increase absorption, important for babies who are still nursing and need iron from outside sources.</p>
<p>3.      Apples: Focus on fiber with the pectin naturally present in apples! These make an excellent breakfast with <a href="https://shawsimpleswaps.com/apple-pie-oatmeal-the-benefits-of-probiotics-in-total-health/">whole grain oats and chopped walnut</a>s, too.</p>
<p>4.      Potatoes: Power up with potassium found in the golden potato! Dice, roast and throw in a <a href="https://shawsimpleswaps.com/roasted-potato-tacos/">taco to create a portable</a> (hello one hand mom) meal on the go.</p>
<p>5.      Tomatoes: An important antioxidant lies within the ruby red tomato — lycopene! Slice and <a href="https://shawsimpleswaps.com/roasted-broccoli-panzanella-salad-30-minute-mediterranean-diet-cookbook-review/">dice in a salad</a> to create a beautiful meal in minutes.</p>
<p>As you can see, it’s important to sort the facts from fiction and remind ourselves what we see in the media is not always based on science (read please don’t think you need to drink celery juice!)</p>
<p>Trust the science, your gut, and remember that MORE produce, over NO produce, always wins!</p>

That study concluded that if half of all Americans increased their consumption of a fruit and vegetable by a single serving each day, <em>20,000 cancer cases could be prevented annually</em>.  The study further concluded that the overwhelming difference between benefit and risk estimates provides confidence that consumers should not be concerned about cancer risks from consuming conventionally grown fruits and vegetables.</p>
<p><a href="https://foodcontaminationjournal.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s40550-015-0018-y">A peer reviewed analysis</a> published in the International Journal of Food Contamination concluded that dietary exposure to pesticides in the diet continue to be at levels far below those of health concern.  &#8220;Consumers should be encouraged to eat fruits, vegetables and grains and should not fear the low levels of pesticide residues found in such foods.&#8221;   This paper provided updated estimates of dietary exposure to pesticides in the U.S. using Total Diet Study findings on pesticide residues.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.ams.usda.gov/sites/default/files/media/2017PDPAnnualSummary.pdf">The United States Department of Agriculture</a> (USDA) and the <a href="https://www.fda.gov/Food/FoodborneIllnessContaminants/Pesticides/ucm618247.htm">Federal Food and Drug Administration</a>(FDA) sampling data consistently show that over 99% of produce have residue levels well below Environmental Protection Agency safety standards, if residues are present at all.</p>
<p>Toxicologists with the University of California’s Personal Chemical Exposure Program determined that a child could literally <a href="https://www.safefruitsandveggies.com/pesticide-residue-calculator/">eat hundreds to thousands of servings of a fruit or veggie in a day</a> and still not have any health effects from residues. Their analysis illustrates how remarkably low any detectable residues are on produce.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3135239/">A peer reviewed study</a> found that substitution of organic forms of produce for conventional forms does not result in a decrease in consumer risk because residue levels on conventional produce are so minute, if residues are present at all.</p>

<section  class='av_textblock_section av-jqmuweya-ccb6bcfef5d7f74f5dea1979301a56e0 '   itemscope="itemscope" itemtype="https://schema.org/BlogPosting" itemprop="blogPost" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop="text" ><p>The American Cancer Society (ACS) recently reported that <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2019/01/08/health/cancer-death-rate-decline-us-study/index.html">cancer deaths in America have dropped by 27% over the last 25 years.</a>  This is welcome and likely surprising news to some since the word “cancer” is continually used by activist groups in many fear-based campaigns, including those that unfairly disparage healthy and safe non-organic produce.  If you listen to those groups, you would think that cancer rates and trends were going in the opposite direction.</p>
<p>But, there is some negative news regarding diet that accompanies this positive trend. The ACS report states that they continue to see certain cancers increasing due to obesity.  This is yet another reason that access to affordable fruits and vegetables remains important along with health initiatives that promote increased produce consumption and improved eating habits.  This finding also indicates that knowingly and actively marketing misinformation about produce safety should be abandoned since  <a href="https://www.safefruitsandveggies.com/residue-research/nutrition-today-low-income-shoppers-and-fruits-and-vegetables-what-do-they-think">studies show this may discourage consumption</a> of both organic and conventional produce.</p>
<p>Those interested in improving their health should know that there are decades of nutritional studies that show a diet rich in fruits and veggies has important cancer fighting characteristics, in addition to preventing other health issues, like heart disease, stroke and diabetes.  These studies were largely conducted using non-organic produce.   A couple examples:</p>
<ul>
<li>A University College of London study found that people who eat seven or more servings of fruits and veggies per day reduce their risk of <a href="https://www.safefruitsandveggies.com/residue-research/7-or-more">premature death by 42%, their cancer risk by 25% and heart disease risk by 31%.</a></li>
<li>A peer reviewed study found that if half of all Americans increased their consumption of a fruit and veggie by a single serving, <a href="https://www.safefruitsandveggies.com/residue-research/cancer-risk-benefit-study">20,000 cancer cases could be prevented annually.</a></li>
</ul>
<p>The decades of nutritional studies confirming the positive impact of produce on health is why the Alliance for Food and Farming supports consumption of organic and conventionally grown produce –choose either but choose to eat more every day.  And, why we continue to share science-based information about the safety of all forms of produce, as well as aggressively counter and correct misinformation.  Our goal is for facts, not fears, to guide consumer choices and positively impact fruit and vegetable consumption.</p>

<section  class='av_textblock_section av-jqmuweya-ccb6bcfef5d7f74f5dea1979301a56e0 '   itemscope="itemscope" itemtype="https://schema.org/BlogPosting" itemprop="blogPost" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop="text" ><p>Recently, we have shared new government residue sampling results from the <a href="https://www.safefruitsandveggies.com/blog/government-sampling-results-continue-verify-produce-safety">Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA),</a> <a href="https://www.safefruitsandveggies.com/blog/usda-report-happy-holiday-news-consumers">United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)</a> and the <a href="https://www.cdpr.ca.gov/docs/pressrls/2018/122718.htm">California Department of Pesticide Regulation (CDPR).</a>  These programs consistently show that 99% of the foods sampled had no detectable residues at all or residues found were well below safety levels set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).</p>
<p>For those who do not want to review these lengthy government reports, the Alliance for Food and Farming (AFF) created an easy-to-use <a href="https://www.safefruitsandveggies.com/pesticide-calculator">“residue calculator”</a> on <a href="https://www.safefruitsandveggies.com/">safefruitsandveggies.com</a>, which is based upon the USDA data.  We asked toxicologists with the University of California Personal Chemical Exposure Program to analyze this data.  Their findings:   A child could literally eat hundreds to thousands of servings of a fruit or veggie in a day and still not have any health effects from residues.  This analysis shows how very minute residues are, if present at all.</p>
<p>The residue calculator features 19 of the most popular fruits and veggies and you can click on a man, woman, teenager or child to see the amount of servings one would have to consume.  For example, a child could eat 181 servings or 1,448 strawberries in a day and still not have any effects from residues.  Apples?  A child could eat 340 apples in a day.  Kale?  7,446 servings!</p>
<p>These government reports and the UC toxicological analysis underscore the diligence of fruit and vegetable farmers when it comes to the judicious use of pesticides approved for organic and conventional crops.  “…growers and farmers are adept at following our comprehensive rules to ensure produce is grown to the highest pesticide standards,&#8221; says Brian Leahy, Director, California Department of Pesticide Regulation.</p>
<p>“Based on the PDP data, consumers can feel confident about eating a diet that is rich in fresh fruits and vegetables,” concludes the USDA report.</p>
<p>Read, learn, choose but eat more organic or conventional fruits and veggies for better health and a longer life</p>

<p>USDA states in its report: <em>&#8220;The PDP annual summaries consistently show that 99 percent of sampled products had residues below EPA tolerances. The PDP data demonstrate that overall pesticide residues found on foods tested are at levels below the tolerances established by EPA and pose no safety concern.  Based on the PDP data, consumers can feel confident about eating a diet that is rich in fresh fruits and vegetables.&#8221;</em></p>
<p>That couldn’t be more clear.  And note that the USDA statement focuses on “consistency.” Because not only are these strong results what USDA sampling finds year after year, <a href="https://www.safefruitsandveggies.com/blog/government-sampling-results-continue-verify-produce-safety">this is also what is “consistently” found by state sampling programs and the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA).</a></p>
<p>However, in the spring, consumers will be greeted with a very different message from activist groups who take this positive news from USDA and turn it into something, well, “dirty.”  By manipulating and exaggerating the USDA PDP data, certain groups strive to cast doubt on the safety of popular and more accessible fruits and veggies.</p>
<p>Fortunately, this tactic is losing traction and attention.  Among the reasons – <a href="https://www.safefruitsandveggies.com/residue-research/nutrition-today-low-income-shoppers-and-fruits-and-vegetables-what-do-they-think">peer reviewed studies</a> are showing that this negative and inaccurate messaging by activists results in low income consumers stating they would be less likely to purchase <em>any</em> produce – organic or conventional.  Further, the science based information found at safefruitsandveggies.com underscores the safety of all produce and the exceptional compliance level among farmers with the laws and regulations governing organic and conventional pesticide use.</p>
<p>So when spring comes around next year and consumers see their favorite fruit or veggie unfairly disparaged, they should remember the December message from USDA.  “<em>Based on the PDP data, consumers can feel confident about eating a diet that is rich in fresh fruits and vegetables.&#8221;</em> That is happy holiday news for everyone.</p>

<section  class='av_textblock_section av-jqmuweya-ccb6bcfef5d7f74f5dea1979301a56e0 '   itemscope="itemscope" itemtype="https://schema.org/BlogPosting" itemprop="blogPost" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop="text" ><p>Recently, one of the Alliance for Food and Farming <a href="https://www.safefruitsandveggies.com/blog/2018-facts-not-fear-media-tour-enlightening-everyone">“Facts Not Fear” Produce Safety Media</a> tour guests, <a href="https://www.quickanddirtytips.com/nutrition-diva">Monica Reinagel  MS, LD/N, CNS, </a> developed a <a href="https://www.quickanddirtytips.com/health-fitness/healthy-eating/whats-it-like-to-run-a-vegetable-farm">new podcast series, &#8220;Faces of Farming</a>.&#8221;  According to Monica:  “Most Americans can’t visit a working farm to see for themselves how their food is treated. That’s why we are taking the mystery out of your meal with Faces of Farming.”</p>
<p>We thank you Monica.  Because at the AFF we often say that we wish we could give every consumer with concerns about produce safety a tour of our farms and the opportunity to meet and talk directly to farmers.  Since this isn’t a realistic option, we do the next best thing – we invite media and nutrition communicators on farm tours so they can pass along what they see firsthand as Monica is doing with this podcast.</p>
<p>Two of the four “Faces of Farming” podcast segments will focus on produce.  The first, <a href="https://www.quickanddirtytips.com/health-fitness/healthy-eating/whats-it-like-to-run-a-vegetable-farm">“What’s It Like to Run a Vegetable Farm,”</a> features Dale Huss of <a href="https://www.oceanmist.com/">Ocean Mist Farms</a>.  This is available to listen to now.  The second segment will feature a strawberry farmer and will be posted on November 20.</p>
