Winter Produce Can Lighten Up January
1/14/2022
As winter storms rage and the pandemic continues, this month can seem quite long and spring seems far away. However, farmers and farm workers are working tirelessly to bring us some much needed color and flavors by providing consumers with a continued supply of fruits and vegetables.
While we see some supply chain interruptions, because of the variety of fruits and vegetables available in the produce aisle, substitutions are easy to make and there is plenty of produce to choose from. Why is it important to fill you cart with fruits and veggies, especially this time of year? Here are just a few reasons:
- Health experts agree that a produce-rich diet can help boost immune function. We have heard this continually throughout the pandemic but our moms and grandmas have pushed this advice for years. We even have age-old sayings, like “an apple a day” to help us all remember the importance of eating produce.
- While produce consumption can positively impact physical health, it may also impact mental health. A peer reviewed study found that people who eat lots of fruits and vegetables are happier and have a stronger sense of well being.
- Study after study verifies the safety of both organic and conventionally grown fruits and vegetables so consumers can choose both with confidence. If supplies are low, be reassured about the safety of any and all produce that you buy.
If you still have concerns about minute levels of residues, just wash organic and conventional produce prior to consumption. The Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends washing fruits and vegetables under running water (no detergents please). According to the FDA, washing produce often eliminates any minute residues, if present at all, as well as dirt and bacteria.
Remember, fruits and vegetables are the only food group that health experts and nutrition professionals recommend we eat more of every day. So don’t let anyone or any group discourage you from increasing your consumption.
Take care and stay safe and healthy.
